Sound Playing Through Microphone

I purchased a new Logitech headset and started playing World of Warcraft.cool game. Problem is when I talk through Ventrilo to my friends, they can hear any audio I hear when I'm speaking extremely loud. The headset works fine when my sound is off (but what fun is that?). I tried another headset and it's the same thing. It's in my configuration somewhere but no idea where.

Running Windows XP Media Center and using a Realtek HD Audio card (on board). This is probably a simple configuration issue but can't find it. I don't think I was clear on this question. The problem is that the mic pics up audio like I'm blasting it through my regular speakers, even though there is no way anything is being picked up from being too loud through the earphones.

I can pull the headphones off and move them 2 inches from my face and I can barely hear a whisper, but when I talk and theres sound in the background, it's being fed right into the mic. I ran the hardware test mentioned above and as soon as the playback isn't barely above the bottom, it goes into a feedback cyclone and turns into a loud hum of feedback. It's definately screwed up somewhere just thought there was a setting to not allow the mic to pickup the playback. Have you made sure that the microphone is muted in the audio control settings? Also under advanced options is microphone boost turned on or off?Does your computer have virtual surround sound? If so is it turned on or off, try the opposite of what your currently have. Disable realtek audio from taskbar (turn it off and see if it works with basic windows sound. This will hopefully narrow down your search.I'm guessing you already have the latest drivers.

Are you using logitech drivers that came with the microphone? Or just plug in?Anyway by the sounds of it I think you simply need to mute the mic in windows volume control while boosting it at the same time in it's advanced settings. I figured it out! I needed to use the Realtek control panel instead of the Windows one. When I got into the Realtek HD Audio Manager there is a Mixer tab. On the mixer tab I changed the settings to reflect my screenshot.

On the record side I Muted the line in 1 or 2, the CD Player and the Stereo Mix, leaving only the microphone enabled. That pretty much did it for me.

Now when I activate my mic nobody can hear what I'm hearing. I appreciate you all trying to help and I hope this helps someone else with a similar setup in the future.

Windows 7 allows sounds picked up from your microphone to flow directly to your speakers, so you receive instant feedback from what you're recording. As an example, if you were recording a training tutorial for your employees, you might want to hear your words as you say them to gauge quality. However, this method works considerably better if you connect a pair of headphones to your speaker's headphone jack to prevent the sounds from feeding back into the microphone. However, if you're speaking into a directional microphone, reducing its sensitivity and keeping it away from your speakers will minimize feedback even when using speakers.
